The state of North Carolina fines John Mann because he shot a runaway slave.

Mann was not Lydias owners so he had no right to shoot her. Violates the 8th amendment because Manns actions where cruel and unusual punishment.

Lydia was only shot and not killed. The court cannot interfere with slave owners and what they do. It's not the courts place to decide wether something is fair they interpret the law. North Carolinas system is based off of slavery.
