10th of November, 1898

-The riot started over an article published in an African American newspaper called the Wilmington Daily Record. It criticized the lynching of an African American rapist in Georgia 2 years prior. The article was controversial because the editor Alexander Manly made a claim that white men were just as likely to rape a black women. In response a mob of 500 white men burned down the office of the Wilmington Daily Record and decided to shoot into African American homes. The militia was sent by the government to stop the violence. However the militia was run by all white democrats and only blacks were arrested. By the end of the riots 11 were dead and 25 were wounded.
